Barksdale recalls growing up in Callaway County, Mo., childhood recollections of school lunch and milk programs, her professional activities in school food services, the various duties in managing school food services in Columbia, Mo., her role and leadership locally and nationally in child nutrition education and in creating training programs, the high standards and professionalism of school food service employees, and the development of child nutrition education in the classrooms and in textbooks.

Sharon Gibson Barksdale grew up on a working farm in Calloway County, Missouri. She attended the University of Missouri at Columbia where she earned a degree in home economics. After teaching briefly, she went on to serve for twenty-seven years as director of school food services for Columbia, Mo.
